This painting features a sorrel horse running by the side of a levitating Holy man, who is carrying a medicine shield symbolizing powerful magic done on behalf of the tribe, during times of great peril.
Medicine Spirit is set against a rustic background featuring many spiritual symbols of native life, the "water deities”, or Dragonflies- carry messages of warning from the spirit world. The spiral shape, or Sipapu, symbolize a wonderful creation mythology as “the becoming" of the people, the origin place in the world that they came into being, and the curving path they took to find their tribal lands.
This artwork reflects the deep connection that elder healers have to their people and to the land, and captures the essence of nature and the American West.
The artwork is a large Diptych, measuring 48 inches in width and 32 inches in height, and is painted on two pieces of hand-made bark paper, made by the Otomi tribe, adding to its unique charm. Amat, or bark paper, is known as the oldest paper in the western hemisphere, and is still made today by the same techniques. The artist purchases this gorgeous paper directly from them.
